Christopher Doern, Ph.D., is a professor of pathology at Virginia Commonwealth University with joint appointments in pediatrics and internal medicine. He has served as director of clinical microbiology at VCU Health since 2013, after directing the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center for 3 years.

Doern earned his Ph.D. from Wake Forest University School of Medicine and completed a fellowship in medical and public health microbiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.

His research interests include the emergence of gram-negative antibiotic resistance, improving the diagnosis of pediatric bloodstream infections and evaluating the impact and outcomes of new technologies in clinical microbiology laboratories.
