Join this free webinar series, featuring discussions with authors from recently published articles in ® (JMBE). Come meet other biologists who do discipline-based education research (DBER), become more familiar with study design and interpretation of data of DBER studies and learn how to improve your teaching in the process. Register for each webinar individually. Free for everyone!

After attending JMBE Live! webinars, participants will be able to do the following:
  • Discuss critical aspects of DBER research study design.
  • Interpret results of DBER studies.
  • Describe how DBER studies can inform classroom or laboratory teaching.
  • Be more motivated to conduct your own DBER study and publish in JMBE.

Community College Biology Students’ Understanding of Vision and Change Core Concepts

Friday, Oct. 10. 1 p.m. ET

The "Vision and Change in Undergraduate Biology Education" report establishes a set of 5 core concepts of which students should build an understanding throughout college biology programs. While student conceptual understanding is well studied in 4-year contexts, there are minimal studies in community college contexts. Community colleges are unique: 38% of U.S. college students are enrolled in them, many of whom identify as historically underrepresented in STEM.

To better understand community college biology students’ learning, the students’ understanding of the "Vision and Change" core concepts was measured using the General Biology–Measuring Achievement and Progression in Science (GenBio-MAPS) assessment. By analyzing data from over 600 students attending 9 different community colleges, the authors asked the following questions. (1) How do community college biology students perform across the 5 "Vision and Change" core concepts? (2) Do institutional-, course- and student-level variables contribute to variation in community college biology students’ conceptual understanding?

Join us for a revealing webinar that dives into the learning of over 600 community college biology students across 9 institutions. Attendees will dive into community college biology students’ understanding of the "Vision and Change" core concepts, examine how student and institutional factors influence performance and discuss what these insights mean for teaching and supporting student success. Whether you’re an educator, researcher or administrator, this session will provide actionable takeaways to inform practice and future study.

Speakers:

  • Noah Courtney, Texas Tech University.
  • Michelle Smith, Ph.D., Cornell University.
  • David Esparza, Ph.D., Cornell University.
  • Moderated by Sarah Fankhauser, Ph.D., JMBE Research Senior Editor.

About the Journal

The ® (JMBE) offers original, previously unpublished, peer-reviewed articles that foster scholarly teaching and provide readily adoptable resources in biology education at the undergraduate, graduate, professional (e.g., medical school), K-12 and informal education levels. JMBE is edited by informed science educators who are active in the pursuit of scholarly teaching and biology education reform.
